Day 10

Image
We did a big day today, just under 28 miles. Maybe a little less tomorrow? We found a wonderful country hotel in Abanallis. The Rincón de Antón. The normal restaurant hours opened at 8:30. We were very hungry, they opened the kitchen early for us and we had a wonderful meal. Clara as hostess took excellent care of us, with cooking by her mother, Nanny. Keith also had a nice visit with Clara’s father Tarno!  I mentioned that we spent last night (Saturday night) in an old convent. The rooms are converted nun cells.  There are still some rules for such a place. The door was locked when we returned from our dinner with Gabor and Katherine at 10:15! We panicked for a bit, then found a way to reach the host and get in. Whew!  City street is Santillana Del Mar where we spend Saturday night. A historic town. This is the first golf course we have seen. We mentioned cow bells in an earlier post. We finally got a picture of one. We see a lot of bathtubs. I mean several per day, usua...

Day 9

Tonight we are in Santillana Del Mar.  This was a relatively dull day. A lot of roadside walking, we made a mistake or two, and ended up on some busy roads, climbing an embankment along an overpass, but did not get arrested! 😃   We walked about 23 miles, about 2,000 feet elevation, in lots of small increments. Another beautiful day of weather! While the day was dull early on it picked up! As we walked along a trail, we reached an area with some workout equipment. Since we have not been able to go to the gym, we decided to fit in a quick workout!  Check out those legs! Beautiful Wooden gate Statues in the middle Of traffic circles. A siren A bison? Flowers Grass It’s not all beautiful. This was a cement plant we walked past. Some of today was a more agricultural area. This cow was scratching her neck on the tree and the fence Santillana is a historic town, lots of cool older buildings. We stayed in an old convent, now converted to a hostel for pilgrims.  Lots of char...

Day 8 (this post had no name originally)

Tonight we are in Santander. This is a large and very metropolitan city. We walked past several brand names stores  we would see at home here. We walked about 25 miles today, but they were pretty easy with generally cool conditions, mostly on smooth surfaces, and with good company for a lot of the day! We walked as far as Somo, then took a 30 minute ferry ride across to Santander. This puts us one day ahead of my planned schedule.  The weather has been absolutely great for us. We might have reached 85 degrees a few times, generally between 68 and 80 degrees, we have not been cold, and have not had rain, just a few sprinkles or drizzle. We learned early on that most people are going at a slower pace then we are. People do this for many reasons. Some have a relaxed schedule so can take longer, others are contemplative and stop at all the churches. We are doing this as a physical challenge and cultural experience. We also have a schedule to maintain, so we press on. Our new frien...
