Day 13 (originally had no title)



We started the day in a light rain, the ponchos kept the rain out, but it’s hot under there! By about 9:30 the rain stopped. We saw Steven and Lore from Belgium again briefly, then met Sylvia from Lithuania too, and 3 women who used to teach together walking a week of the Camino to catch up.

While the day was overcast, it was pleasant walking with good scenery, including the ocean, farms, mountains, flowers, and animals.

We walked 23.5 miles and elevaron was 2,890 feet. We reached Villaviciosa by about 4:45. On the way into town we met another couple from the US of similar age, and agreed to have dinner with them.


The rough translation of this is “the whole comino is your comino”


This is a montage of various place people come from who have walked the Camino. 


There are places on the Camino that are wheel chair accessible. This sign with the steep decline made us laugh. 


We see bed springs as gates frequently. Here is an example. Way to up cycle Spain!










Lisa- Love to see the kitties along the way😺

We saw a lot of snails today. 


Lisa- I’ve never seen this flower before, so texted my girl Tami Taulborg (Master Gardener), she told me it’s a passion fruit flower. I googled it, and of course she’s right. Love the bee getting some pollen. It worked it’s way around the center of the flower, then flew to the next.

Had a great time at dinner with Ruth and Steve from Florida. Great to run into some fellow Americans 🇺🇸

Our route today takes us to the end of the journey, and the end of the land, or Finisterre. More detailed map shown below.  With rain in the forecast we were concerned that we might be wet and cold all day. There was an hour or so that was pretty uncomfortable, with both wind and rain. Then the weather broke to cloudy with occasional light rain, and after about 3 hours, it was dry, so we took off our rain ponchos for the rest of the walk.  We saw a number of others in the rain, but very few for a while when it was dry, then the last 2 miles out to the end were very crowded. Day 24 - We reached Santiago!

Our walk into Santiago was crowded, and not much different from the walk yesterday: it was dark at first, and we walked with others all making their way into the city. When reached the cathedral, it was about 10:30 am. There were tours going on, and since it is Sunday, I assume there was mass at various times. Since we don’t follow the Catholic traditions of faith, the cathedral is not a major draw. It is a large stately building, and we did snap some photos in front. We went to the Camino office and got our official certificates of completion. We will revisit that area in a few days when we return to Santiago. Our walk in was relatively short, 13 miles, and since we have some extra days, we are extending our walk to Finisterre, or the end of the world. This point has a lighthouse and has the distinction, according to the internet, of being the lighthouse in Europe which is closest to the United States. Anyway. Day 19

We walked 25 miles today, elevation of 2,800 feet. Tonight we are staying in another albergue. While it is a shared dorm room so less privacy, we get to meet people and visit. We have 432 miles accumulated so far. A  little rain time early today, and our last bay of Biscay views. In Ribadeo at 2nd breakfast by 9:45, we had 8 miles completed. Walked an hour or so with thunder and dark clouds threatening, but the rain held off. Pressed on by ourselves for most of the day. Stopped at an oasis coffee shop and bought our concha (shells) for our backpacks. Also ran into Toren and Angelica there, and finished our day walking with them. We had a pilgrim dinner at the Albergue Savior. Visited with Paulina for a while. She is originally from Mexico City, now lives in Madrid .
